侯孝賢坦言「小時候愛唱歌」，甚至還曾參加歌唱比賽，與他對談的陳文茜虧他「自不量力新成屋自備款法拍屋自備款二手屋自備款中古車自備款」，他立刻笑著回嗆：「我很會唱。」

侯孝賢表示，他小學五年級理解五線譜之後，就開始跟著歌本唱歌，「沒錢就去書店偷歌本！」爬到樹上大展歌喉。

他上藝專後曾瞞著同學，偷偷去參加歌唱比賽，但當時因為緊張，一上台就完全「鎖喉」失聲，最後只好乖乖回到藝專唸書。他回憶兒時因為太喜歡唱歌，曾在爸爸睡覺時，在一旁練唱台語歌，被吵醒的爸爸一氣之下就用指節敲他頭；曾出過台語專輯的侯導，自小就展現出對歌唱的熱情。

侯孝賢過去脾氣火爆，他以前當副導時，得處理工作人員的糾紛，最後竟也加入戰局，「我去拉他們還不理，跟他們打成一團。」等他執導電影後，某次製片和助理打了起來，他原本想加入戰局，「最後想說不對，我已經當導演了。」才收起火爆脾氣。愛大聲唱歌的侯導，有著爽朗直接的個性。
